Matt McClain joined the KCA’s Patient & Caregiver Advisory Council (PCAC) in 2023.

What motivated you to get involved with the KCA’s PCAC?

When I was newly diagnosed, I reached out to a few people who I knew had kidney cancer. Unlike me, none of them were stage IV, so while they were sympathetic, they were not able to provide me much in the way of advice. It wasn’t until I found KCA that I discovered resources where I could educate myself on my disease, and find the inspiration I needed so badly to face the road ahead. Nearly five years down the road, I want to give something back to the community that helped me through some of my darkest days.

What are you excited to bring to the organization?

As a non-profit professional, I look forward to contributing whatever knowledge and experience I can to help KCA fulfill its mission. I am especially excited to try and enhance peer-to-peer efforts with other patients and their families.

How do you hope to see the KCA grow?

My understanding is that the number of kidney cancer cases in the county is increasing (perhaps due to improved diagnostics). My hope is that KCA can continue providing hand-in-glove assistance both on the research side and the patient services side.

What is your favorite travel destination?

As an avid surfer, I’m a sucker for any place that has palm trees, a beach, and waves.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy outdoor sports, like to travel, and spend time with my wife and our pets (two cats, two dogs).
