Spotlight: Sarah Benitez, Clinical Advisory Board

Sarah Benitez, LCSW, OSW-C, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.

What motivated you to get involved with the KCA?

I have worked with kidney diseases and kidney cancers for over 10 years, which has given me the privilege of witnessing patients’ journeys throughout their medical care. As a social worker, I aim to use these experiences to support patient and provider education and help ensure patients and their families receive the best possible support.

How is kidney cancer part of your work?

As a genitourinary social worker, I frequently meet patients with kidney cancer as they pursue treatment. I collaborate closely with our medical team to help patients navigate resources that address both practical and emotional needs.

What is the most meaningful part of your job?

The most meaningful part of my work is being present during sensitive and vulnerable moments in my patients’ lives. Many are experiencing emotions they’ve never faced before while trying to navigate next steps in their care. It’s deeply rewarding to help them find resources, provide emotional support, and peer connections so they know they are not alone in this journey.

What are you excited to bring to the KCA?

I’m excited to contribute as a social worker by bringing my experience in patient and caregiver advocacy to the Kidney Cancer Association. Whether it’s helping patients manage emotions or navigate complex systems, I look forward to collaborating with others on the Clinical Advisory Board to address the multifaceted concerns patients face.

What is your favorite travel destination?

I love visiting places with ornate architecture and intricate designs. I could spend hours admiring the buildings in New York City.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy creative outlets like painting and crafting. I also love exploring the area around me through mini day trips.
