Kidney Cancer Association

Renata Penafiel, PA-C, MPAS, is a Physician Assistant at The James Cancer Center at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

What motivated you to get involved with the KCA?

Through my time at the James Cancer Center at OSU, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with physicians who specialize in kidney cancer. This experience has not only deepened my understanding of the disease, but also strengthened my passion for patient well-being, education, and empowerment. My patients are truly the reason I was motivated to get involved with the Kidney Cancer Association

How is kidney cancer part of your work?

The majority of the patients I see in my clinical practice are individuals diagnosed with kidney cancer. Through both my shared and independent clinics, I care for new referrals, patients preparing for treatment, those enrolled in clinical trials, and patients undergoing ongoing cancer surveillance.

What is the most meaningful part of your job?

The most meaningful part of my work is the opportunity to truly connect with my patients. I value not only providing education on their diagnosis, treatment options, follow-up, and surveillance, but also getting to know them as people—their families, what brings them joy, and what they are fighting for.

What are you most excited to bring to the KCA?

I am excited to bring the clinical knowledge I’ve gained from working closely with Dr. Eric Singer, whose practice is focused on the treatment and management of kidney cancer. I am equally enthusiastic about learning from fellow KCA members who have been doing this work for many years. I hope to bring their expertise back into my own practice to continue improving care for our patients.

What is your favorite travel destination?

My favorite travel destination is Ecuador. I was born there and still have a lot of family that lives there who I love to visit. It is also one of the most beautiful countries I have ever been to!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to travel and see new environments and cultures. I also love to explore my creativity with anything artsy or crafty.
