Kidney Cancer Association

Jessica Cheng, MSN, APRN, FNP-C is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She practices in the Genitourinary Medical Oncology outpatient clinic, specializing in kidney and bladder cancers. Jessica provides comprehensive longitudinal oncology care, including new-patient and follow-up evaluations, ordering and interpreting labs and imaging, managing treatment toxicities—such as immune-related adverse events and TKI-associated side effects—ensuring timely, evidence-based supportive care, and educating patients and families about their diagnosis, treatment options, and symptom-management strategies.

What motivated you to get involved with the KCA?

Several of my colleagues are part of this incredible organization, and I’ve always admired the work they do. They encouraged me to join, knowing how passionate I am about patient education and support. Becoming involved with the KCA allows me to reach patients and caregivers beyond my day-to-day clinical responsibilities. I truly love helping patients navigate their cancer journey—understanding their diagnosis, managing side effects, and easing the stress and uncertainty that often arise along the way.

How is kidney cancer part of your work?

I have the privilege of working with two amazing physicians, including one who focuses primarily on kidney cancers and rare kidney cancer subtypes. His passion for advocating for patients and advancing research in rare diseases inspires me daily. Through this work, I’ve developed a strong interest in rare renal tumors—such as renal medullary carcinoma—and in becoming a reliable resource for patients who often feel lost or unsure of where to turn. Whether it’s helping them access recommended treatments, understand their disease, or manage toxicities, I’m committed to supporting them every step of the way.

What is the most meaningful part of your job?

Caring for patients and their families is by far the most meaningful part of my work. I had my own experience as a cancer patient in my early 20s, when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The exceptional care and kindness I received at MD Anderson sparked my interest in healthcare and continues to shape how I care for others. Although I was fortunate to have a strong prognosis, many of our patients face far more uncertainty. I understand the anxiety that comes with treatment decisions, restaging scans, and managing side effects, and I strive to provide the compassion and reassurance they need to feel supported and confident in their care.

What are you excited to bring to the KCA?

I’m excited to help expand awareness and education around rare kidney cancers—including renal medullary carcinoma, translocation RCC, chromophobe, and papillary subtypes. These diagnoses often come with heightened anxiety because there’s less publicly available information and fewer patient-to-patient connections. Many individuals actively seek support groups, firsthand stories, and guidance on expectations, prognosis, treatment options, and clinical trials. I hope to bring more clarity, resources, and visibility to this community so patients feel informed, empowered, and less alone.

What is your favorite travel destination?

Greece quickly became one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. Athens offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and charming pockets of city life. Santorini truly lives up to the hype—the sunsets are stunning, and the white buildings with blue domes overlooking the water are unforgettable. Crete felt especially authentic, with its mountain landscapes, goats, picturesque villages, and incredibly kind people. I’m already trying to plan a return trip to explore more islands!

What do you like to do in your free time?

Although I love connecting with patients in clinic, I’m an introvert at heart. I enjoy unwinding at home with my family, watching Netflix, taking walks with my dog, and trying new restaurants or cafés with my husband. I’m also into crafts—right now I’m learning polymer clay and slowly attempting crochet. I love trying new activities around Houston with friends, playing games (Activate, arcades, claw machines), and occasionally, I’ll gather enough energy to travel.
