The City of Austin, Texas proclaimed March 1, the first day of Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, to be “Kidney Cancer Awareness Day” from 2025 onward.

John Ferrell, Annamaria Scaccia, and Katie Coleman at Austin City Hall.

KCA Ambassador and patient advocate Annamaria Scaccia requested the proclamation.

“I’m grateful that Austin has recognized March 1 —  the start of Kidney Cancer Awareness Month — as Kidney Cancer Awareness Day,” she said. “The city is home to a growing community of survivors, caregivers, and advocates working hard to raise awareness, fund research, and push for a cure. This proclamation shows that Austin stands with us in this fight.”

Two other Austin-based kidney cancer patient advocates joined Annamaria at Austin City Hall last weekend to celebrate the proclamation – John Ferrell, who serves together with Annamaria on the KCA’s Patient & Caregiver Advisory Council and founded the Ferrell Foundation, and Katie Coleman, founder of the Chromophobe and Oncocytic Tumor Alliance, a KCA Affiliate Partner. Each have current or upcoming plans to lead local awareness and fundraising events for kidney cancer research.

Kidney Cancer Awareness month is a time to “#OrangeUp” and honor those impacted by kidney cancer. In the US, over 600,000 people live with kidney cancer and about 81,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year. But with over a dozen approved treatments and huge strides in our understanding of this disease, the future looks brighter than ever. In March, the KCA celebrates the collective efforts of patients, families, healthcare professionals, and anyone who advocates to move the needle in kidney cancer.
