Why Advance Care Planning Matters for Kidney Cancer Patients
This is a guest post by the National Alliance for Care at Home in recognition of National Healthcare Decisions Day on April 16.

A kidney cancer diagnosis brings a lot of decisions – about treatment, next steps, and what matters most to you. Advance care planning is how you make sure those answers are heard, even when you can’t speak for yourself.
At CaringInfo, we define advance care planning as a process, not a one-time event, of reflecting on your values, beliefs, and healthcare preferences so that your care aligns with what you want. For people living with serious illness, that process is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and the people who love you.
What is an advance directive?
An advance directive is the written record of your planning. It can do two things: document your wishes for medical treatment if you become unable to communicate and name a healthcare agent, someone you trust to speak on your behalf. An advance directive and other documents help make your wishes known, giving your medical team a clear roadmap and spare your loved ones from having to guess under pressure.

Why it matters now
Waiting for a crisis to think through these questions means making decisions in some of the hardest moments of your life, or leaving them to someone else entirely. Planning while you’re able to think clearly means that if your situation changes, your care can still reflect your priorities.
It also opens the door to a conversation. Talking with your family and your care team about what matters to you allows you to stay in control of your care and relieves them of having to make difficult decisions on your behalf.
How to get started
CaringInfo offers free, state-specific advance directive forms as well as:
- plain-language guidance on choosing a healthcare agent,
- having the conversation with your family,
- storing your documents,
- and making your wishes known.
April 16 is National Healthcare Decisions Day, a nationwide reminder that these conversations are worth having. Use it as your moment to start.
