Claudia Tatum joined the KCA’s Patient & Caregiver Advisory Council in 2023. She is based in Oklahoma.

What motivated you to get involved with the KCA’s PCAC?

From the time I was diagnosed in Jan 2023, I began thinking about what the lesson learned would be from my Cancer Adventure. Then, how can I can best use the lesson to serve the community. It was a natural progression that I apply for the PCAC and become involved in advocacy.  Since becoming a kidney cancer survivor, I am even more motivated to support others with the same diagnosis. The KCA is very impressive and I look forward to learning more about the needs of the organization.

What are you excited to bring to the organization?

As a very long time Oncology Nurse (since 1987) and Radiation Therapist (since 1977), I bring willingness, enthusiasm, and an understanding of what patients and family go through with a cancer diagnosis to promote the KCA’s mission. My perspective has become enhanced with my own diagnosis!

How do you hope to see the KCA grow?

Awareness, research, and support resources will always be needed. We have come a very long way in the management of kidney cancer… let’s keep that momentum going and expand our services! I am interested to see what areas need growing in the organization.

Claudia often pet sits furry friends.

What is your favorite travel destination?

My favorite travel destination? I spent a lot of time scuba diving in the Caribbean, now I’m focusing on seeing our beautiful country!

I love all forms of water, National Parks, botanical gardens, historical and cultural experiences of all kinds. I am always up for a Road Trip to see new sights— especially if a BFF is along for the fun.

What do you like to do in your free time?

It’s good to be retired from full time work, but I still enjoy working prn in my cancer center in Tulsa.  A great day is Pilates in the morning and Pickleball in the afternoon.  I make time for volunteering at a homeless mission, my church Youth Ministry, and community activities—Farmers Markets, Art Crawls, minor league Baseball! Walking, hiking, cooking, catching up with friends also brings joy to my days!
