This is a guest post by Jahmira McKinley. Jahmira’s son Keith Parker Jr. was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive type of kidney cancer on September 29, 2023 at age 23 and passed away on December 9, 2024. Jahmira and her family, who are based in Detroit, Michigan, created the Keith Parker Jr. Foundation to honor her son’s life and legacy.

My son, Keith Parker Jr., was a deeply family-oriented person who valued his relationships above all else. He had a natural ability to bring joy to others through his sense of humor, often making people laugh and feel at ease. At his core, he was caring and selfless — always willing to put others before himself and offer support whenever it was needed. Keith was also athletic, with a strong passion for basketball, which was not only something he enjoyed but an important part of who he was.

Keith was initially misdiagnosed, which delayed a full understanding of what he was experiencing. As his condition worsened, he was eventually rushed to the emergency room due to persistent vomiting and other serious complications, including concerns related to a previously unhealed leg injury. It was at that point that he received a more accurate diagnosis on September 29, 2023 — stage 4 renal cell carcinoma — allowing for a clearer path forward in his care.

Following his diagnosis, Keith began treatment, including radiation. While necessary, the treatment took a significant toll on his body. He experienced severe side effects, most notably daily vomiting, which greatly impacted his quality of life. Despite these challenges, his experience reflects both the difficulty of the diagnostic process and the intensity of the treatment he endured.

Keith’s treatment journey for kidney cancer at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit was both physically and emotionally challenging. The medications he received had significant side effects, including changes to his skin color and a noticeable impact on his appetite, which made maintaining his strength even more difficult. In addition to medication, radiation treatments were a key part of his care, adding to the overall intensity of what he endured.

Despite these challenges, the medical team provided strong support throughout his treatment. The doctors, especially Dr. Jasty, along with the radiation team, worked closely with Keith and communicated effectively, helping to ensure he felt cared for and supported during a very difficult time.

One of the hardest parts of the journey was witnessing the toll the illness and treatment took on him. Watching his pain and gradual decline was incredibly difficult, as was seeing him unable to participate in the activities he once loved, like basketball. Even so, his strength throughout the process left a lasting impression on everyone around him.

Some of the hardest parts of Keith’s kidney cancer journey were the ways it gradually limited his ability to live the life he had planned. His health challenges began to impact things he deeply valued, including traveling and his hopes for having children. These losses were especially difficult because they represented not just present struggles, but future dreams that were being altered.

Despite everything he faced, Keith maintained an optimistic attitude. He continued to socialize with friends and stayed connected to those around him, often asking about others and showing genuine care for their well-being — even while dealing with his own pain and uncertainty. That selflessness and positivity stood out to everyone who knew him.

Even in the midst of Keith’s diagnosis, there were moments of comfort and joy that helped carry everyone through. One of the greatest sources of light was Keith himself — his smile brought warmth to those around him and created moments of peace, even during the most difficult times.

The support received through McLaren also made a meaningful difference. Simple but thoughtful touches, like access to a visitation room and available snacks, helped create a more comforting environment for family and loved ones who spent long hours there.

Time together became especially important. Being intentional about creating memories — like spending time talking, laughing, and having game nights — brought a sense of normalcy and closeness that everyone cherished. These moments served as reminders of the importance of showing up for one another and taking health seriously.

Through this experience, one of the most important lessons learned by our family was just how short and precious life is and how vital it is to be present for family, to appreciate the time you have, and to find joy in even the smallest moments together. Our journey reinforced the importance of cherishing time, relationships, and the moments that matter most.

What mattered most to Keith was his family, his love for basketball, and creating a sense of stability in his life. These priorities guided his decisions and reflected the kind of person he was—grounded, loyal, and committed to the people and things he cared about most. Overall, Keith was someone who left a lasting impact on those around him through his kindness, humor, and unwavering dedication to others.

The Keith Parker Jr. Foundation (main website and Facebook page) was created to honor Keith’s life, legacy, and the impact he had on those around him. The foundation focuses on giving back to the community and raising awareness, particularly around cancer and the importance of support systems during difficult times. In his memory, the foundation has organized meaningful initiatives such as cancer walks, hoop runs that reflect Keith’s love for basketball, scholarships to support and uplift others, and participated in Kidney Cancer Awareness Month.

The foundation also continues to stay active through upcoming events and outreach efforts. We have plans for a scholarship brunch in May 2026, as well as a gala aimed at raising funds to further their mission. Additionally, the foundation participates in community events like health fairs to provide resources and education.

Through both the foundation’s work and our family’s personal experience, we want to emphasize the importance of staying positive, utilizing available support resources, and advocating for yourself or your loved ones. We encourage families to ask questions and seek clarity when navigating medical situations. It was so important for us to repeatedly ask doctors to explain information about Keith’s condition until we fully understood it. Overall, the foundation serves as a powerful way to carry Keith’s legacy forward while supporting others on similar journeys.

Hello, my son Nigel Stewart was diagnosed October of 2025, with RCC stage 4 with mets and is actively going through the same issues as Keith Parker Jr. His first visit to the doctor he was misdiagnosed with GERD. Nigel is the youngest of my 3 sons. This is a hard journey for us. We are seeking clinical trials right now. I do understand that the prognosis is poor for this rare aggressive cancer that my son has. We are still fighting, the weight loss is unbelievable and sad to watch the progression of this terrible disease. I’m trying to be strong but it is very hard. You all are doind great things to honor Keith, this is so beautiful. I can tell that you all loved him so much. If you have any words of encouragment for me or my 32 year old son let me know.
