In season 2, episode 3 of Kidney Cancer Unfiltered, host Annamaria Scaccia welcomed Kate Zalewski, a registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in renal nutrition. Kate cleared up misconceptions about kidney diets and emphasized the importance of individualized nutrition plans.

Key insights from their conversation included:

  1. There isn’t one “renal diet.” Guidelines vary based on labs, kidney function, and individual needs. Foods like bananas, tomatoes, and beans don’t need to be restricted unless labs show an issue.
  2. Quality matters as much as quantity. Plant proteins are gentler on the kidneys compared to excessive animal proteins.
  3. Balance is key. Limit sodium if blood pressure is a concern, but don’t eliminate it entirely. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for kidney health.
  4. Understanding creatinine, eGFR, and potassium levels helps guide dietary choices. Don’t panic at one abnormal result – hydration and other factors can impact labs.

Kate’s advice? Work with a renal dietitian to develop a personalized plan. Moderation, not restriction, ensures you’re getting the nutrition you need while enjoying food.
